Chasing Shadows First Wives Book 3 eBook Catherine Bybee
I really love Catherine Bybee's books and devour them as soon as they come out. So far I enjoyed (almost) every book of the Weekday Brides, but the First Wives were a bit hit and miss for me.I was really excited how this book started out and couldn't stop reading. I share a bit of history with Avery and the description of the self defense classes and how they were woven into the meeting of Liam were realistic and cute. I didn't mind that the plot was a bit far-fetched ;-)
But ...
So, first what I loved:
Liam.
I like Bybee's growly Navy-SEAL/rich politician alpha heroes (Team Carter, here).
But they were getting interchangeable. So that Liam is just a regular guy and doesn't live alone and doesn't even do any sports :-), was a welcome change.
What I also loved:
That the book centered on martial arts with this kind of backstory for the heroine.
It's not the first time that Bybee depicted women with a difficult past and I like that a lot about her books.
Learning self-defense with a fighting style that is up close and personal is difficult if you suffered from a traumatic experience. In the beginning, it is even difficult training with other women. When that got easier, our trainer also suggested training with men, just like Avery's coach. I struggled more than Avery. I practise Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, so the goal of the guy is to climb on top of you. Not exactly helpful. For months, I rolled into a ball instead of fighting back ... and the men were like Liam, they didn't want to be "the bad guy". And that is ultimately what helps you recover from the event, and what brings back trust: that you train with guys and they are nothing like your attacker. So you are triggered, but nothing bad happens.
To progress like that from single classes to women only classes to mixed classes in martial arts helps a lot with PTSD and I would have loved to see that further develop in this book.
I wasn't surprised by Avery running off or her self-destructive behavior like some of the other reviewers. I didn't like reading it but unfortunately it felt believable and realistic. Maybe not for Avery, but for someone who was sexually assaulted. It does horrible things to twist your instincts.
So that was sort of "don't love it, but okay".
What grated on me:
The way she used her wealth.
It is nice for a change to read about a heroine who has a lot of money. I laughed about the private jet set-up and how that was played out.
What I didn't like was the way she threw around money needlessly. Like in New York, she pays 300 dollars for one sketch. Fine. The students are nice and great artists - which is great for 300 dollars. But she just tosses a handful of hundred dollar bills on the table before she goes. She even thinks herself that she doles the bills out to them as if they are monopoly money.
Yeah, why?
When she has her face made-up professionally, she feels bad for taking up the woman's time without buying anything, so she "buys a little make-up". And walks out with a bag of make-up worth 500 dollars.
I didn't get that. It would have made sense to me if she had been alone in that situation and had felt bad, and the woman with the cosmetic company had lifted her spirits by saying charming things and pampering her. Then it would feel justified plot-wise to make sure she is payed a nice sum in commission for the make-up. But to throw that much money around for a short random encounter?
Normally this sort of behavior is shown in books or movies for characters we are supposed to dislike.
And for the first time, I didn't feel the sex scenes. Normally, they fit the characters and the story very well. They did this time as well, but they somehow fell flat. Even in the later scene, which could have been very emotional.

Chasing Shadows First Wives Book 3 eBook Catherine Bybee Reviews
Book 3 of the First Wives Club. A club of women you marrying men who only wanted a wife for professional reasons for a limited amount of time and paid for that privilege without any sexual relationship. This series is about theses women whose contracts were over and how they were proceeding with their lives and how they found a new normal relationships.
What a great book! Following Avery's journey from Survivor of a vicious brutal attack to a strong Warrior ready for love made for a great story. Avery has never been good at relationships - not friends, not family , not men. She has a small group of friends - the First Wives Club - that she has finally developed true bonds with. Her family is still a challenge, but with a chance meeting - Liam is the spark that opens Avery up to true love. It was so great to catch up with the rest of the FW club, and looking forward to the stories for the rest of the crew.
Avery is a great character with her passion, Independence, and loyalty. Catherine Bybee is a real craftsman with her characters and stories that are different. She makes each series individual stories unique, full of loyal friends. Avery ‘s way of dealing with her demons is interesting and entertaining, and fits with her character. The second wives loyalty to their friends is one of many things that makes the series endearing. Liam is the nice, steady guy who is a perfect fit to balance Avery’s fierce independence and impulsiveness. The story has romance, mystery, strife, danger, humor, and interesting intelligent characters. A typical unique Catherine Bybee book.
Chasing Shadows is the third book in the First Wives Series. This book is Avery and Liam's story. Avery is haunted by a brutal attack on her a year ago. When she meets Liam he is immediately smitten with her. Avery has thick, high walls around her heart and Liam is determined to break them down. Everyone would like someone to love them as Liam loves Avery. There are laughs.....there are tears...... then there is suspense. ....a few surprises here and there. All in all once I started this book I could not put it down. Well deserving of all five stars.
Catherine Bybee is one of my favorite authors and continues to prove why with Chasing Shadows, the third installment in the First Wives series. She always sucks me in with her stories of romance with a touch of suspense.
Avery Grant was left for dead after a brutal attack. While she's physically healed from the encounter, she's not quite there emotionally. She made a promise to not be a 'victim' again so she starts taking Krav Maga classes.
After meeting Avery for the first time, Liam Holt is intrigued. After a little sleuthing, he notices the name of the studio where Avery takes her classes. The contractor thinks the studio could probably use some work.
Soon Avery and Liam are spendine time together, both in the studio and out. Despite forming a bond, Avery continues to deal with the aftereffects of her attack. Liam proves that she can rely on him. Everything that Avery thought she was beginning to be put behind her is brought to the forefront when she finds herself in danger again. Will the revelations about the man who attacked at her put herself, the other First Wives club member and Liam in jeopardy?
Bybee continues to showcase strong female characters that stand up for themselves and fight when needed. Like the previous stories, this one sucked me in from the first page! A great addition to the series!

What an incredible storyline and characters , I am still thinking about this story long after finishing the book. The pace of this story was perfect from start to finish and the romance and suspense was exceptionally well-written. Once again this author has delivered a story with so many feelings that I couldn't put it down. If I am looking for stunning storytelling than I don't have to look any further than this author, she delivers time after time, and this book was perfect.
Definitely another five star rating.
