After reading DARE, Josh's story and my first book by this author (loved it), I decided to go back and read the True North series. So I'm starting with the first one and I'm not sure if I'm going to move to the next two. The main characters are so young. I loved the parents being involved and loving in Josh's book, but they were not so much in this story. Kind of left the kids on their own while they toured the world. Jake decided to prove himself by joining the military and came back with PTSD. One thing I do not like about this story is that we do not get Jake's POV, it is all from Livie's POV. On the flip side, Jake doesn't have a problem with just saying what he feels. Livie and her best friend, Jules (Jake's sister) act very high schoolish throughout the book. Everyone in the story likes to drink (Jake, Livie, his brothers, etc…). It’s like having house parties when your parents are away. Livie is consumed with loving Jake, it’s like a childhood crush that never end. I thought she would be his anchor in dealing with his emotions, nightmares, depression but when they were supposed to be at their happiest he committed an accidental overdose. WTF? Reader Opinion: How is she supposed to continue to be there for him when feeling like you weren’t enough for him to want to live? Livie’s Opinion: Just love him more. Jake did save face in the hospital when she saw him after his overdose, so it was accidental but still didn’t solve his PTSD problem. I don’t think this problem was ever solved, Livie just continued to be there for him through his mood swings. They find out that the military is not diagnosing PTSD but giving the men dishonorable discharges to save face. This is another problem that wasn’t addressed or solved. Jake and Livie communicate through songs a lot, so if you don’t know the songs (like me), you just kind of have to guess what they are trying to say to each other. Their road trip was boring, I skimmed through those sections. I finished the book feeling like their lives are very unsettled and not planned out.

True North Book 1 Finding Home Livie and Jake edition by Allie Juliette Mousseau Nicole Hewitt Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Jake & Livie (aka Olivia) bonded as kids & their relationship progressed to love. When he left for the military, they were both heartbroken to be separated - or, at least, Livie thought they both were. But when his letters stopped, she figured she was the only one to really feel anything. The story picks up w/ Jake coming back to town & trying to get back into Livie's good graces.

Their story is sweet & definitely has a steamy side. Real, genuine issues that are faced by many a soldier returning home are explored, and done well. I very much enjoyed getting to know these two, and their families. This is mostly a 5 star read w/ just a couple of issues that I can't go into because they might be considered spoilery! )
Livie has been in love with Jake for what seems like her whole life. The main problem is that Jake is best friends with her brother Nate and she is viewed as the protected little sister, which most people know is worse than being stuck in the friend zone! Livie has had to sit idly by and watch her crush date other girls and being totally ignored as a possible date herself. When Jake goes to leave for the Army, Livie is crushed. She is going to miss him so much and her ultimate fear is him coming back engaged, married or some other fashion of being completely unavailable to her forever.

After he leaves for the Army, he does keep in touch with Livie for the first year. Then it suddenly stops. Livie dedicates herself to finishing high school and trying to keep thoughts of Jake at bay. When he comes back home from serving his time in Afghanistan (single), Livie has to make the ultimate decision. She either has to show him that she is not just the kid little sister or let him go forever. What will she do? Read to find out!

This was such an amazing book. I cried my eyes out many times. The book was well written and I fell in love with all the characters. I was trapped in the story early on and held on tight until it was over. The subject matter touched me deeply and I am so glad I read this book! True North 2 is up next for me and I can’t wait to see where Allie takes us with Nate and Jules. Go 1-click so you won’t be left behind with this series!
TRUE NORTH
Book 1
Finding Home Livie and Jake
by Allie Juliette Mousseau

I love Allie's books - there's just something about them that ultimately draws me in from the start to finish! I've read Dare and Burn (of the Brothers of Ink and Steel series), and this True North series is going to be no different, I'm going to love it regardless.

Jake North, a survivor of many tours in Afghanistan returns home after four years away. Olivia Morrisey ("Livie") is the best friend of Jake's little sister Julia, and who has had a crush on Jake since like forever. But the Jake that comes home is different, he has this dark, faraway look in his eyes, like he’s not even there when he talks to you. With his family concerned and worried about him, Livie decides to find out why he's become so distant and what she discovers is both shocking and heartbreaking. She helps Jake conquer and exorcise his demons and let go of the past so he can move forward - with her.

I loved Liv's character! She never gave up hope that one day she and Jake would be together. Even through Jake's "supposed" suicide attempt she stuck by him when the going got tough. In a way she was like Jake's therapy to self healing.

My favourite part of the book was when she took on Jake for the drinking game truth or dare. It is true what they say, alcohol does make you brave especially when revealing whether you have undergarments on or not lol.

Would recommend this for all incurable romantics - ones who believe in hope, forgiveness and finding your way back home to the ones you love.
