After reading Mara Power's new book, Shadows of Atlantis, I must say it is one of the best books I've read in a long time. As a huge J.R.R. Tolkien fan, Shadows of Atlantis develops a rich and complex history, background, character development, and world setting, analogous to the creation of Middle Earth. Combining aspects of real world history as described by Plato and Ignatius Donnelly, it is amazing, impressive, and obvious how much real-world research Mara has done into this marvelous account of ancient Atlantis.

One truly amazing aspect of the book is how well Mara ties in actual history with a very plausible and entertaining tale of suspense, romance, and novelty. Science, engineering, plot twists, character depth, and mythological history are all intertwined beautifully in the book for a seamless reader experience. Reminiscent in many ways of the worlds of Roger Zelazny (Chronicles of Amber), J.R.R. Tolkien (Lord of the Rings) and even J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, Mara does a beautiful job of tying fact and fiction together in such a way as to convince the reader she has solved the mystery of Atlantis and the ancient world. It is abundantly clear how much effort went into this book, not only in historical research of Atlantis, but also very plausible technological (think Elon Musk) aspects of an ancient civilization destroyed and great knowledge once known, and then lost.

In between the lines, I was impressed by what, in my opinion, hinted at aspects from the famous prophecies of Edgar Cayce, and even theories of mystical and metaphysical beliefs often found in Eastern philosophy.

As the reader progresses through the book, Mara does an outstanding job of building the characters, introducing and creating a rich world from its beginnings to the present, and leaves the reader breathless in a lush adventure of lust, betrayal, suspense; along with an amazing cliff hanger at the end!

I look forward to her next book in this epic series!

Captivating storytelling. It sucked me in from the start and I was lost in a world that I could not distinguish from a dream or a surreal movie. The characters are great and surprising in their environment. If reading at night, you sure will take the characters into your dreams. A masterwork!

Have you ever finished a story so good that you just sat around thinking about it for the next days/weeks? This book does that. I got the book as a gift and within the first few pages, I was absolutely blown away by the magical world I'd been transported to. The stunning Atlantean universe is saturated with dazzling imagery which leaves you longing to go there. You'll have multiple moments of "I can't believe someone thought of this." To me, the book took me on an adventure that felt like Avatar meets Game of Thrones in this electrifying futuristic environment that's straight out of a Marvel comic where you could ACTUALLY HEAR THE MUSIC.

I can't wait for the next one and I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes a franchised movie or the basis for some sort of virtual reality game universe. Give this book to your friends who are into sci-fi fantasy magical medieval sort entertainment but appreciated complex characters and get a kick out of being teased in a new age fact or fiction sort of way.
Mara has a sprightly style, verging enough on the vernacular to align with the reader's thinking, and very easy to read. Her timing is great, with startling and compelling events paced just right to keep the narrative from getting bogged down. The characters are distinct, interesting and well-developed. The Atlantean world she created is believable, with interesting technology - the crystals, the hover disks - woven aptly into the narrative. Meanwhile, the humans maintain the characteristics of humans as we know them today, making it easy to relate to the setting and the story.
