Charlana, a strong-willed Germanic princess, yearns for her father’s approval. But she cannot be the daughter that he wants her to be– learned and cultured in the progressive ways of the Romans.
In spite of her struggle to belong, Charlana follows her own path and becomes skilled in weaponry and horsemanship, two gifts that will lead her to a love that she is not ready for, and a destiny that will consume her.
Her father and tribal chief, Aric, has his own struggles. To advance his tribe through literacy, he enlists a former Roman Centurion to teach the children how to read and write. But the Roman has a daughter, a beautiful dark-haired woman who greatly intrigues Aric. In his desperation, he betrays both of them in an act that compels him toward salvation and a profound personal change that will affect not only his estranged daughter, Charlana, but also his entire tribe.
Set in 180 A.D., it is a time of change. Germanic tribes are starting to vie for Roman land and power. Goths are marauding. The Christian faith, though more ancient than the oldest people, has seen its culmination in a Jewish man named Jesus, and the good news of a Savior is spreading to many lands, causing the greatest change of all – that which is in the human heart.
Kingdom Horizon edition by Ashley Nicole Jan Ackerson Religion Spirituality eBooks
Ashley Nicole's new book, Kingdom Horizon, is a compelling blend of deep spiritual themes, science fiction, historical fiction and romance. Very few authors can pull off a piece of work so intricately varied and maintain a cohesive plot. Ashley does just that.In the opening pages, readers meet Charlana, the protagonist and heroine of the story. And, as with any good story, conflict emerges from the very beginning. Charlana is at odds with her father, the leader of their Germanic tribe, the Arlevani. Her love, Jeret, is alternately affectionate and overbearing. Charlana’s heart is loyal to the ancient ways of their tribe while, under her father’s leadership, the rest of the Arlevani are stretching toward the future and willing to make changes along the way.
It is this loyalty that threatens to destroy Charlana. In pursuit of the ancient spirits and rituals, she is introduced to pure evil in the form of demonic presence. But while Charlana dances with the devil, other members of her tribe are meeting Jesus Christ and finding peace in the salvation He offers—even in the midst of the most trying circumstances.
This is story telling at its finest—managing to keep the reader spellbound while telling the story of salvation and finally coming to a satisfying conclusion highlighting the grace of God.

Kingdom Horizon edition by Ashley Nicole Jan Ackerson Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Ashley Nicole knocked this one out of the park with a book the entire family can enjoy. Kingdom Horizon is wonderful story of a young girl who struggles to find her place in life while simultaneously, trying to win the attention and approval of her father, a king, who is more occupied with trying to elevate his people and advance their way of life. This heartwarming book is full of drama, romance, and action that will surely captivate the reader and transport you to 180 A.D. in a land where power is sought and faiths are tested.
Kingdom Horizon is a genre-breaking novel that seamlessly blends history, romance, fantasy, and Christian fiction into an intriguing narrative of a young woman with a deep love for her people. Charlana will do anything to preserve the values and customs of her tribe—but she does not realize that there is something new coming to her land—Christianity—that is even stronger than the deep roots of tradition. Written with a fresh new voice, Kingdom Horizon will draw you in with its fascinating cast of characters, all with their own set of contradictions the chief’s daughter who is fierce in battle but gentle with her equine companions, the Roman soldier who has discovered peace and a new faith, the chieftain with a roaming eye who nevertheless loves his family. This book is unlike any that I’ve read, and it will leave you with a new appreciation for a pivotal time in the early history of the spread of Christianity.
Kingdom Horizon is Christian fiction, and the author is not afraid to be explicit in the book's messaging. What keeps the book from becoming “preachy” is the thoughtful way in which Ashley Nicole explores the challenge and calling of belief in the midst of the messiness that is human existence. The Christian story itself is a study in contradictions as its primary figure of Christ is exalted only after He passes through the most demeaning death Roman culture had to offer.
Taking place in the second century A.D. around Germany and Rome, the characters in Kingdom Horizon are much closer to the historical roots of the Christian story than modern Christians are. As such, one of the most fascinating aspects of this novel is watching the way the primary characters, members of a Germanic tribe, wrestle with this new religion and its implications for their own belief systems and way of life. Does accepting a Christian identity mean that one must give up one's cultural heritage? This question is most poignantly explored in the character of Charlana, a Germanic tribal princess who is desperate to maintain her tribe's history and culture despite her father's interest in moving the tribe “forward” through the educational attainment and, eventually, the religion of his mentor, the Christian Laurentius, a Roman and former centurion.
Charlana resents what she perceives as Laurentius's “intrusion” into her tribe's way of life, especially when her father converts to Christianity after a devastating personal failure and betrayal. Ironically, it is only the change of heart wrought by his conversion that allows him to offer Charlana the selfless “father-love” she has longed for her entire life, although the avenue through which it comes initially pushes her away.
This is not a book that offers easy answers – even the characters with the highest moral standards display moments of selfishness, rage, and doubt, while those who turn to darkness do so believing they have the purest intentions. The combination of rich characters and a vivid historical setting make for a story that is haunting in its exploration of this tumultuous time in Christian history and the way it may have impacted those who lived through it. It is also a story about the way belief can lend meaning to even the darkest moments in our lives, and how God shapes the things we didn't think we wanted into the very things we need.
